SONGS & SONATAS OF FOUR PARTS
Concert - Henry Purcell
A story is told, imagined and imaginary, through Purcell’s enchanting tunes (including the well-known Cold song) and his unfortunately too little known sonatas of four parts. Despite his relatively short life, Purcell has composed impressive works: 1 opera, 5 “semi-operas”, 53 stage musics, 25 odes, 10 cantatas, 68 anthems… He writes his first masterpieces for viols. The Twelve Sonatas of three parts are a new starting point in his creative process. Encouraged by the success of Purcell’s previous works, his widow will publish Ten Sonatas of four parts, two years after his passing, in 1697. The compositions are marked by the excessive use of chromatism and an unexpected but touching harmony.
